Small-Scale Water Project – Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community, Abia State

We are delighted to share another successful Small-Scale Water Project, implemented by E2E Initiative in collaboration with the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, to improve access to safe, reliable and accessible water for women, girls and the wider community of Umuchiakuma-Ihechiowa, Arochukwu Local Government Area, Abia State.

Implemented between March and August 2026, the project culminated in the commissioning of the borehole and water infrastructure on 29 August 2026, marking another important milestone in E2E Initiative’s commitment to improving the wellbeing and resilience of rural communities.

For women and girls in Umuchiakuma-Ihechiowa, access to water is more than a basic necessity. It directly affects their health, education, dignity, time and livelihoods. Before the intervention, community members relied significantly on a village stream to meet their water needs, requiring women and girls to spend valuable time fetching water.

The new borehole and supporting water infrastructure have brought a safer and more accessible water source closer to the community, helping to reduce the burden of water collection and exposure to potentially unsafe water sources.

The intervention also contributes to improved hygiene and reduced exposure to water-related health risks, particularly among women, girls and other vulnerable members of the community.

For adolescent girls, reliable access to water is particularly important for menstrual hygiene management. Improved access to water and hygiene facilities can help reduce some of the challenges that may affect girls’ comfort, dignity and participation in school and other daily activities.

Project Implementation

The project was implemented in a series of coordinated stages from June to August 2026, including:

1. Project Planning and Site Preparation

2. Borehole Drilling

3. Borehole Development and Water Infrastructure Installation

4. Installation of Water Storage Tanks

5. Plumbing and Water Distribution System

6. Testing, Completion and Commissioning

Infrastructure provided includes:

1. Borehole water source

2. Water storage tanks

3. Elevated steel tank support structure

4. Connected water piping

5. Water distribution infrastructure

Following the successful completion of the works, the project was officially commissioned on 29 August 2026, providing the community with improved access to a reliable water source.

Through this intervention, E2E Initiative and the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation have strengthened access to basic water infrastructure and supported the health, dignity, and wellbeing of women, girls, and the wider community of Umuchiakuma-Ihechiowa.

A Community Investment in Health, Dignity and Resilience

The project represents more than the provision of a borehole. It is an investment in the everyday lives of community members, particularly women and girls who have traditionally carried much of the responsibility for household water collection.

With improved access to water, time spent searching for and fetching water can be redirected towards education, livelihoods, family wellbeing and community participation.

This intervention reinforces E2E Initiative’s commitment to advancing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) as an essential component of healthier, more resilient and sustainable communities.

Clean water. Better health. Greater dignity. Stronger communities.
