Akwa Ibom Court Upholds Women’s Equal Inheritance Rights

In a recent ruling, Justice Ntong Ntong emphasized the importance of fairness and equal inheritance rights, stating that “a person’s gender should not be used as a tool of oppression, especially within families.”women inheritance He criticized the unjust actions of the applicant who sought to exploit his nieces simply because they are women, describing such behavior as not only discriminatory but also in violation of constitutional principles.

Justice Ntong further called upon traditional leaders in Akwa Ibom State to recognize the equal rights of women in matters of inheritance, affirming that daughters have the same entitlements as sons when it comes to family property.

This judgment resonates with the goals of the Empowered to Empower (E2E) Initiative, which strives to break barriers for women, ensuring that cultural norms and legal systems evolve to protect their rights. By advocating for female empowerment and justice, E2E addresses issues like inheritance rights, striving to dismantle inequalities that prevent women from reaching their full potential.

Now we are calling on all Nigerian states particularly those in the south Eastern State region, to end the harmful practice of disinheriting females and girl-children due to customs and traditions. and also calling on all state commisssioners for women  affairs, community leaders, Stakeholders and CSOs to stand in solidarity for the common just for equality in womens right and free them from all forms of descrimation.

Its time for Nigeria to move forward ,ensuring women’s right are protected and their potentials is unleashed. Let’s work together to create a fairer, more just society for all.
