Small-Scale Water Project – Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community, Abia State
Title : Improving Access to Safe and Reliable Water
Implemented by: Empowered to Empower The Less Privileged Women Initiative (E2E Initiative)
Supported by: T.Y. Danjuma Foundation
Location: Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community, Abia State, Nigeria
Year: 2026
Project Type: Small-Scale Borehole Water Supply Project
Project Overview
Access to safe and reliable water remains an essential foundation for healthy and resilient communities. In response to the water needs of Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community in Abia State, the Empowered to Empower The Less Privileged Women Initiative (E2E Initiative), with support from the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, implemented a small-scale borehole water project to improve access to a dependable water source for community members.
The project progressed through a series of stages, from site preparation and borehole drilling to water storage infrastructure, installation and commissioning.
Stage 1: Project Planning and Site Preparation
The project commenced with the identification and preparation of a suitable site within the community for the borehole development.
Site preparation involved clearing and organizing the designated area to provide adequate space for drilling equipment and subsequent installation of the water infrastructure.
Objective: To establish a suitable and accessible location for the borehole and associated water facilities.
Stage 2: Borehole Drilling
Following site preparation, drilling activities commenced to access an underground water source.
Specialized drilling equipment was deployed at the site, with the drilling process carried out to the required depth and geological conditions necessary to access groundwater
Stage 3: Borehole Development and Water Infrastructure Installation
After successful drilling, the borehole was developed and the necessary components installed to enable water abstraction.
The project subsequently progressed to the installation of the water storage and distribution infrastructure, including elevated support structures and water storage tanks.
This stage was essential for ensuring that water extracted from the borehole could be stored and made available for community use.
Stage 4: Installation of Water Storage Tanks
Water storage tanks were installed on a purpose-built elevated steel structure.
The elevated arrangement allows water to be stored and distributed through the connected pipe network. The completed tank system forms an important part of the project’s water delivery infrastructure.
Infrastructure provided includes:
Borehole water source
Water storage tanks
Elevated steel tank support structure
Connected water piping
Associated water distribution infrastructure
Stage 5: Plumbing and Water Distribution System
The water tanks were connected to the borehole and distribution network through a system of pipes.
The completed plumbing arrangement facilitates the movement of water from the borehole into the storage tanks and onward to designated points of use.
This integrated system transforms the borehole from simply a drilled water source into a functional community water supply facility.
Stage 6: Testing, Completion and Commissioning
Following the completion of the infrastructure, the water project was tested and commissioned.
The completed facility represents the culmination of the drilling, installation, plumbing and construction activities undertaken at the site.
The commissioning also marked the transition of the project from implementation to community use.
A Completed Community Water Facility
The completed project provides Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community with improved access to a more reliable water source and water storage infrastructure.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project contributes to improved community wellbeing by helping address one of the fundamental requirements for healthy and sustainable community life: access to water.
The project demonstrates what can be achieved through effective collaboration between community stakeholders, development organizations and philanthropic partners.
Partnership for Community Impact
E2E Initiative appreciates the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation for its support toward the implementation of this project and its commitment to initiatives that improve the wellbeing of communities.
Through this partnership, a community need has been translated into tangible infrastructure that will serve the people of Umuchiakuma Ihechioma Community, Abia State.
*E2E Initiative remains committed to empowering underserved communities and supporting practical interventions that contribute to healthier, more resilient and sustainable communities.
